CENTER ACTIVITIES

Sector Processing Center (SPC):

During March, NOA, JMA, and ESA processed greater than 99% of A data into B1/B2 data.

Normal operations were reported by NOA, JMA and ESA. No reports have been received from AES for December, January, February and March.

CSU reported delivery of the remaining INSAT B2 data to the GPC, covering January through March 89; however, the calibration used is that for 88, which will be revised once METEOSAT and GMS B3 for these months have been obtained.

MET-3 direct collection rates for April were only about 30%, apparently because of a weak telemetry signal in the relay from GOES-6. However, collection via the backup system is improving and may reach 80% (although no B1 data are provided by this route). All equipment for reception of MET-3 data through a DOMSAT (domestic communication satellite) will arrive in June.

Special Area Processing Center (SAPC):

No reports were received.

Satellite Calibration Center (SCC):

The SCC reported receipt of AC data for February/March 92 for MET-3, MET-4 and NOAA-11 and for March 92 for GOES-7 and GMS-4. BC data were sent to the GPC for MET-3 for November 91 - January 92 and for MET-4 and GMS-4 for January 92. Significant quality problems are present in the AES AC data for GOES-7.

Global Processing Center (GPC):

The GPC continued to receive B2 data, BC data and correlative data in a routine manner.

Production of NOAA-11 (preliminary) B3 data is current.

Production of NOAA-12 (preliminary) B3 data is current.

Production of METEOSAT-4 (preliminary) B3 data is current.

Production of GOES-7 (preliminary) B3 data is current (with some problems still in July and August 91 B2 data).

Production of GMS-4 (preliminary) B3 data is current.

Production of INSAT-1 (preliminary) B3 data has been completed from January 86 through December 88.

Production of TOVS and the ice/snow correlative datasets is current.

Special CX (pixel-level ISCCP results) datasets for FIRE CIRRUS I (October/November 1986), FIRE MARINE STRATUS (June/July 1987), ICE I (September/October 1987), and ICE II (September/October 1989) were completed and shipped to the respective representatives of these projects.

C1 data for December 90 have been completed; C2 data for 90 were also finished. All C1/C2 data through December 90 have been delivered to the ICA. Production of C1/C2 data has stopped because the NAVY/NOAA Sea Ice dataset for 91 has not been delivered yet. As soon as these data are received, production will proceed through June 91.

Current plans are to cease production of this version of the C1/C2 data with June 91, giving an eight year climatology. Re-processing to produce the new version of C1/C2 will commence in late summer.

A manuscript describing the cloud detection algorithm and its validation has been completed and submitted for publication in the Journal of Climate.

ISCCP Central Archive (ICA):

The ICA continued to receive B1 data from NOA, AES, ESA, and JMA and B3 and C data from the GPC in a routine manner.

This month, the ICA will issue a new catalog of its holdings, current at the end of April 92.

SATELLITE HEALTH

The health of GMS-4, METEOSAT-3 (at 50 W), METEOSAT-4, METEOSAT-5, GOES-7, NOAA-11, and NOAA-12 remained good.

DATA DELIVERED
