CENTER ACTIVITIES

Sector Processing Center (SPC):

During December, NOA, JMA, AES, CSU and ESA processed greater than 98% of A data into B1/B2 data (a good finish to the year).Normal operations were reported by NOA, JMA, AES, CSU and ESA.CSU has winterized their antenna to improve METEOSAT-3 collection rate and is instituting a procedure to select the best image of three near the nominal time slot.

Special Area Processing Center (SAPC):

No report received.

Satellite Calibration Center (SCC):

The SCC received AC data for December 92 from GOES-7, GMS-4, METEOSAT-3, METEOSAT-4 and NOAA-11. AC data for November 92 have not been received from NOAA-11. BC data for METEOSAT-4, METEOSAT-5 and GOES-7 for September 92 and for GMS-4 for October 92 were sent to the GPC this month.

Global Processing Center (GPC):

The GPC continued to receive B2 data, BC data and correlative data in a routine manner.Production of NOAA-11 (preliminary) B3 data is current.Production of NOAA-12 (preliminary) B3 data is current.Production of METEOSAT-4 (preliminary) B3 data is current.Production of METEOSAT-3 (at 50W) B3 data has not started yet.Production of GOES-7 (preliminary) B3 data is current. The B2 data delivery backlog includes March - June 92.Production of GMS-4 (preliminary) B3 data is current.Production of all INSAT-1 (preliminary) B3 data has been completed. INSAT-1 B3 have been re-calibrated for January - July 86. Tests of the calibration are underway. The new calibration dataset has been delivered to the ICA.Production of the ice/snow correlative dataset is current. Re-processing of the whole TOVS dataset has now been completed through December 90.Production of C1/C2 data has ended. Work is underway to refine the calibration procedures for the NOAA data. Once completed, the calibrations will be extended beyond 91 after checking for any effects of the Mt. Pinatubo volcanic cloud. Changes to the processing software are being made to (1) improve polar cloud detection and optical thickness retrieval, (2) improve optical thickness retrieval for ice clouds, (3) refine some minor radiative model details, (4) refine cloud type statistics, and (5) make some corrections. Within the next few months, the GPC will begin re-processing the whole C1/C2 dataset to make these changes and will resume processing of new C1/C2 data beyond June 91.

ISCCP Central Archive (ICA):

The ICA continued to receive B1 data from NOA, AES, ESA, CSU and JMA and B3 and C data from the GPC in a routine manner.

SATELLITE HEALTH

The health of GMS-4, METEOSAT-3 (at 50 W), METEOSAT-4, METEOSAT-5, GOES-7, NOAA-11, and NOAA-12 remained good.
