CENTER ACTIVITIES

Sector Processing Center (SPC):

During June, NOA, JMA, AES and CSU processed greater than 89% of A data into B1/B2 data.Normal operations were reported by NOA, JMA and CSU. No report was received from ESA.AES reported loss of 7 images on 16 June and 5 images on 30 June because of singal loss at the bit synchronizer.

Special Area Processing Center (SAPC):

No report received.

Satellite Calibration Center (SCC):

No report received.

Global Processing Center (GPC):

The GPC continued to receive B2 data, BC data and correlative data in a routine manner.Production of NOAA-11 (preliminary) B3 data is current.Production of NOAA-12 (preliminary) B3 data is current.Production of GOES-7 (preliminary) B3 data is current. The backlog B2 data for April - June 92 were received (although the data tape for May had I/O errors and will be replaced).Production of METEOSAT-3 B3 data has not started yet. Final testing of software is underway.Production of METEOSAT-4/5 (preliminary) B3 data is current.Production of GMS-4 (preliminary) B3 data is current.Production of all INSAT-1 (preliminary) B3 data for January 86 through March 89 has been completed. Apparent short-term calibration variations are being investigated before delivery of INSAT-1 B3 data.Production of the ice/snow correlative dataset is current. Notice was received from the Joint Navy/NOAA Sea Ice center that the sea ice data for 92 will not be available until early 94 because of computer system changes. This will delay final processing of cloud datasets for 92 and 93.Testing of the software revisions for processing of TOVS after the format changes in 92 was completed and the backlog of TOVS correlative data processed. The data for 92 were sent to the ICA; processing is now current. In the old radiative analysis, cloud top temperatures were retrieved assuming no scattering of infrared radiation by the cloud. Although this is a small effect, particularly for lower-level clouds, the scattered radiation effect is accounted for in the Minnis threatment of ice clouds. For consistency, we have now installed a correction for this effect for water clouds into the analysis code. Testing of the changes to the radiative model are continuing.

ISCCP Central Archive (ICA):

The ICA continued to receive B1 data from NOA, AES, ESA, CSU and JMA and B3 and C data from the GPC in a routine manner.

SATELLITE HEALTH

The health of GMS-4, METEOSAT-3 (at 75 W), METEOSAT-4, METEOSAT-5, GOES-7, and NOAA-11 remained good. The higher than normal scan motor jitter noise in the AVHRR Channel 3 on NOAA-12 has been eliminated by operating the instrument at higher temperatures. Launch of NOAA-I was delayed until 4 August 93 by electrical problems.
