CENTER ACTIVITIES

Sector Processing Center (SPC):

During August, NOA, ESA, JMA, and AES processed greater than 99% of A data into B1/B2 data. CSU collected more than 86% of B1/B2 data.

Normal operations for August were reported by NOA, ESA, JMA, AES and CSU.

CSU began collecting GOES-7 B1/B2 data in September 94 to overlap continuing AES collections. GOES-8 check-out continues with operations expected to begin in late October 94. CSU is collecting some GOES-8 data now. AES is beginning to develop software for collection of GOES-8 and plans to cease collecting GOES-7 data sometime in October 94.

Special Area Processing Center (SAPC):

No report received.

Satellite Calibration Center (SCC):

SCC began reporting by e-mail this month. AC data were received for July 94 from GMS-4 and for August 94 from GMS-4, METEOSAT-3, METEOSAT-5, GOES-7 and NOAA-11. BC data for April 94 from METEOSAT-3 and for February 94 from METEOSAT-5 were sent to the GPC. A sample of METEOSAT-5 and NOAA-11 HIRS data has been collected to test normalization of the 6.7 m channel radiances. Orbit predictions to match NOAA-12 data with the geostationary satellites for September and October 94 have been sent to the NOAA SPC to allow normalization against NOAA-12 until NOAA-J is launched.

Global Processing Center (GPC):

The GPC continued to receive B2 data, BC data and correlative data in a routine manner.

Production of NOAA-11 (preliminary) B3 data is current. Final B3 data have been produced though December 91.

Production of NOAA-12 (preliminary) B3 data is current. Final B3 data for NOAA-10 have been produced through October 91 and for NOAA-12 through December 91.

Production of GOES-7 (preliminary) B3 data is current. The processing of the UWS replacement B2 data continues. Final B3 data for GOES-7 have been produced through December 91.

Production of METEOSAT-3 (preliminary) B3 data is current.

Production of METEOSAT-5 (preliminary) B3 data is current. Final B3 data for METEOSAT-4 have been produced through December 91.

Production of GMS-4 (preliminary) B3 data is current. Final B3 data for GMS-4 have been produced through December 91.

Production of all INSAT-1 (preliminary) B3 data has been completed.

Production of the ice/snow and TOVS correlative datasets is current. The delivery of sea ice data for 93 is being arranged. Arrangements are also being made to obtain sea ice and snow data more directly on a quarterly schedule.

RE-PROCESSING HAS FINALLY STARTED!! The first datasets will be to fill several special requests from TOGA-COARE, Surface Radiation Budget, and FIRE. Half of the TOGA-COARE period dataset has been completed. We have three full production machines going, so we should be able to re-process at least six data-months per month. After production becomes routine, we will work to increase the production pace.

ISCCP Central Archive (ICA):

The ICA continued to receive B1 data from NOA, AES, ESA, CSU and JMA and B3 and C data from the GPC in a routine manner.

SATELLITE HEALTH

The health of GMS-4, METEOSAT-3 (at 75 W), METEOSAT-5, GOES-7 and NOAA-12 remained good. Check out of GOES-8 continues; operations are expected to begin in late October 94. The scan motor in the AVHRR on NOAA-11 lost synchronization at 2335 UTC on 13 September 94. The latest assessment is that this problem will not be rectified, so that NOAA-11 must be considered lost. The launch of NOAA-J (to replace NOAA-11) is now scheduled for 4 December 94.
