NUMBER 72
DATE: 08/04/89
Sector Processing Center (SPC):
During June, NOA and JMA collectively processed more than 95% of A data into B1/B2 data.
Normal operations were reported by NOA and JMA.
No reports were received from ESA and AES.
AES reported a complete failure of it data reception equipment early on 30 July; no estimate of the time required to repair it is available.
JMA sent the replacement IR calibration tables for March - August 87 to the GPC.
CSU sent a description of their proposed INSAT B2 format to the GPC. After discussion and revision, a test
tape will be sent, probably in September.
Special Area Processing Center (SAPC):
No reports were received.
Satellite Calibration Center (SCC):
SCC has completed most of its software conversion (to a new computer system) and processing of BC data for METEOSAT and GOES-WEST has resumed. The SCC plans for delivery of BC data (assuming no further problems finding suitable targets in GOES-WEST images) is as follows:
Aug 89: MET-2/3 BC for Jul, Aug, Oct 88 GOES-7 BC for Apr, Jul, Oct 87, Jan 88
Sep 89: MET-3 BC for Nov 88 (NOAA-11), Jan 89 GOES-7 BC for Apr, Jul, Oct 88
Oct 89: GOES-7 BC for Nov 88 (NOAA-11), Jan 89 GOES-6 BC for Jul, Oct 87
Nov 89: GOES-6 BC for Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct 88
Dec 89: GOES-6 BC for Jan 89 GMS-3 BC for Jul, Oct 88, Jan 89
Jan 90: MET-3, GOES-7 and GMS-3 BC for Apr 89
If this schedule is maintained approximately, then the backlog of BC deliveries will be eliminated early next
year. Some additional AC data may be needed for GOES-6 in early 88.
Global Processing Center (GPC):
The GPC continued to receive B2 data and correlative data in a routine manner.
Re-processing of all NOAA B3 data to correct the small IR count error has been completed (through Feb 88); these data are being delivered to the ICA. Production of new NOAA B3 has resumed with Mar 88.
Replacement IR calibration tables for Mar - Aug 87 have been received from JMA. Processing of GMS-3 B3 data will resume next month.
The B2-B3 processing software for GOES-6 data received from CSU has now been revised to accomodate format changes introduced at the time of the change-over to AAA format image transmissions. Some additional testing will be conducted by producing the B3 data for Apr 87; this will also allow for a check of the effects of the transmission changes on IR calibration.
Inspection of all B3 data to detect short-term calibration anomalies has been completed. Re-calibration and replacement of B3 data tapes has now been completed for MET-2 and GMS-3 through 85.
Re-processing of the C1 data to correct several small errors has been completed for March - April 84 and for April 85, completing the replacement of all C1 data. These data have all been delivered to the ICA. Minor revisions of the C1 data production software are now underway; full production is planned to re-start in August.
Although the additional data sets for the Surface Radiation Budget Project for Oct 86 have been produced, delivery has been delayed to develop procedures that allow more flexible formatting of these data (since the map grid is different for each satellite in CX data, this requires some explanation on the data tapes). Production of special CX data for NOAA-9 and METEOSAT-2 in September - October 87 for the ICE project has been completed. These data will be delivered as soon as the tape formatting issues are resolved.
Production of C1 data was resumed on one machine, while the other machine was used for testing of
revisions. C1 data for Jul 84 have been completed and are being prepared for delivery to the ICA. Full
production on two machines will resume next week after installation of our new main CPU. Final system
testing will continue in parallel, now that new disk storage space has been acquired.
ISCCP Central Archive (ICA):
The ICA continued to receive B1 data from NOA, AES, ESA, and JMA and B3 and C data from the GPC in
a routine manner.
The health of GMS-3, METEOSAT-3, METEOSAT-4, GOES-7, NOAA-10 and NOAA-11 remained good.
Beginning delivery of INSAT B1 data.
Delivering backlog of NOAA-10 B2 data for Dec 87 through Jul 88 and May through Jun 89.
Completing BC data for 1987 and 1988.
Correcting small, short-term calibration anomalies in the B3 data for 1985 and 1986.
Delivering all B3 data for 1986, 1987 and 1988 to the ICA.
Delivering sea ice data for 1988 to the GPC.
Beginning delivery of C2 data.
Delivery of some special C data sets for FIRE, ICE and the Surface Radiation Budget project.
