ISCCP PROJECT STATUS REPORT

CENTER ACTIVITIES

Sector Processing Center (SPC):

During August, NOA and AES collectively processed more than 94% of A data into B1/B2 data.

Normal operations were reported by NOA.

No report was received from ESA for the second month. No report was received from JMA.

Lightning strikes at the Wallops Ground Receiving Station knocked out GOES data reception for part of 14 August.

AES reported the loss of their only bit synchronizer in late July, causing them to revert to their old (less reliable) data collection system. Repair is under investigation and a back-up is on order. Data were lost on the 30/31 July and on 24, 25, 30 and 31 August due to inadequate operator coverage of the data collection equipment.

Special Area Processing Center (SAPC):

No reports were received.

Satellite Calibration Center (SCC):

The SCC reported sending BC data for GOES-7 from April 87 through January 88 and for MET-3 from July 88 through October 88; however, these data have not yet been received at the GPC.

Global Processing Center (GPC):

The GPC continued to receive B2 data and correlative data in a routine manner.

First production of NOAA-11 B3 data has been completed; however, the IR calibration coefficients were found to be meaningless for the NOAA-11 B2 data from 25 September 88 through 12 October 88. NOAA is investigating this problem. B3 data from November 88 through December 88 were successfully produced.

The B3 data from GOES-6 for April 1987 has been produced again after resolution of some minor problems and questions. These data now look good. The apparent gain change in the IR calibration is still being investigated.

Inspection of all B3 data to detect short-term calibration anomalies has been completed. Re-calibration and replacement of B3 data tapes has been completed for all satellites through 86. The B3 data for GOES-6 and GMS-3 are being prepared for delivery to the ICA.

The B3 data set is now complete through 1986; data for 1987 should be completed over the next few months.

All of the special CX data sets requested by the SRB Project for October 86 and by the ICE project for September - October 87 have been delivered.

C1 data for October and November 84 have been completed. Production of C1 data for December 84 and January 85 is underway.

ISCCP Central Archive (ICA):

The ICA continued to receive B1 data from NOA, AES, ESA, and JMA and B3 and C data from the GPC in a routine manner.

SATELLITE HEALTH

The health of GMS-3, METEOSAT-3, METEOSAT-4, GOES-7, NOAA-10 and NOAA-11 remained good. GMS-4 was successfully launched on 5 September 89 after the first attempt on 8 August was scrubbed. ESA has agreed to move MET-3 to 50 West to provide improved coverage of the Atlantic sector. Arrangements for data collection and processing for ISCCP have not been determined.
