ISCCP PROJECT STATUS REPORT

CENTER ACTIVITIES

Sector Processing Center (SPC):

During July, NOA, AES, JMA and ESA processed greater than 95% of A data into B1/B2 data.

Normal operations were reported by NOA, AES, JMA and ESA.

AES reported a somewhat erratic transmission from the satellite, especially in the first part of the month.

Special Area Processing Center (SAPC):

No reports were received.

Satellite Calibration Center (SCC):

Extra BC data for April/May 90 near a transition between METEOSAT-3 and METEOSAT-4 were received. BC data for GOES-7 were also received for October 89 (revision) and April 90.

Global Processing Center (GPC):

The GPC continued to receive B2 data and correlative data in a routine manner.

Production of NOAA-11 (preliminary) B3 data is current.

Production of NOAA-10 (preliminary) B3 data is current.

Production of METEOSAT (preliminary) B3 data is current.

Production of GOES-6 (preliminary) B3 data is completed. Re-calibration of GOES-6 B3 data has been completed through September 87.

Production of GOES-7 (preliminary) B3 data has been completed through May 89; data for June 89 need to be replaced, however. A problem has been discovered in the earliest GOES-7 data in the form of a variable offset in pixel number between the visible and infrared images. Inspections are underway to measure the offset so that it can be removed.

GMS (preliminary) B3 data have been produced for the several months (March, April, June, October and November 87 and January 88) for which replacement B1 data were required. Nominal calibration information for GMS-4 is now complete; production of GMS-4 (preliminary) B3 data will begin next week.

Production of TOVS correlative data is current, but we still have not received complete snow or sea ice data for 89.

C1 data for August, September, October and November 86 have been completed and shipped to the ICA.

Final versions of C2 data for 83 and 84 have been completed and are being prepared for shipment to the ICA.

ISCCP Central Archive (ICA):

The ICA continued to receive B1 data from NOA, AES, ESA, and JMA and B3 and C data from the GPC in a routine manner.

SATELLITE HEALTH

The health of GMS-4, METEOSAT-3, METEOSAT-4, GOES-7, NOAA-10 and NOAA-11 remained good. The planned launch date for MET-5 is February 91. An apparent design flaw in the GOES-NEXT imager mirror has been discovered. This flaw, if real, would cause the mirror to warp when solar heating of the spacecraft varies. The problem is under investigation. This problem will further delay the launch of GOES-I until after February 92. GOES-7 has enough fuel to last into 93.
