NUMBER 87
DATE: 11/02/90
Sector Processing Center (SPC):
During September, NOA, AES, and ESA processed greater than 93% of A data into B1/B2 data.
Normal operations were reported by NOA and ESA. No report was received from JMA.
AES reported a loss of power on 28 September that caused the loss of one to two days of data.
Special Area Processing Center (SAPC):
No reports were received.
Satellite Calibration Center (SCC):
Additional BC data for GMS-4 for February/March 90 were received to determine the timing of a change in
the VIS calibration between January and April 90. Regular GMS-4 BC data for April/July 90 and
METEOSAT-4 BC for July 90 were also received. BC data are now complete through April 90.
Global Processing Center (GPC):
The GPC continued to receive B2 data and correlative data in a routine manner.
Production of NOAA-11 (preliminary) B3 data is current.
Production of NOAA-10 (preliminary) B3 data is current. Re-calibration of NOAA-10 data has been completed
through March 88.
Production of METEOSAT (preliminary) B3 data is current.
Production of GOES-6 (preliminary) B3 data is completed. Re-calibration of GOES-6 B3 data has been
completed through October 88 and the B3 data have been shipped to the ICA.
Production of GOES-7 (preliminary) B3 data is current. Replacement B2 data for September 88, November
88 and June 89 were received and have been processed.
Production of GMS-4 (preliminary) B3 data is complete through May 90. Some difficulties with navigation
accuracy were encountered in March 90, but have been resolved. Re-calibration of GMS B3 data has been
completed through December 87 and the B3 data shipped to the ICA.
Production of TOVS correlative data is current, but we still have not received complete snow or sea ice data
for 89.
C1 data for December 86 was completed. Software problems were encountered concerning the addition of
a new satellite (NOAA-10) and a change in the internal format of snow/ice data. This delayed completion of
December 86 C1 and requires re-processing of January 87 C1.
C2 data for 86 have been completed and have been shipped to the ICA. A small error in the diurnal correction
procedure in C2 processing was detected and corrected. All of the C2 data have been reprocessed. C2 data
are now available for 83 - 86.
A draft of the documentation for C2 data has been completed and given to the archives for their customers.
A final revision of the C1/C2 documentation will be completed next month.
ISCCP Central Archive (ICA):
The ICA continued to receive B1 data from NOA, AES, ESA, and JMA and B3 and C data from the GPC in a routine manner.
The ICA reported that orders for C2 data are quickly increasing, even before we had completed much of it.
It seems there are a lot of researchers out there who are most interested in very small datasets like C2.
The health of GMS-4, METEOSAT-3, METEOSAT-4, GOES-7, NOAA-10 and NOAA-11 remained good.
Delivering backlog of NOAA-10 B2 data for October 89 through September 90 to the GPC.
Delivering backlog of INSAT-1 B2 data for April 86 through April 89 to the GPC.
Delivering all B3 data for 1987, 1988 and 1989 to the ICA.
Delivering snow and sea ice data for 1989 to the GPC.
Completing C1/C2 data for 1987, 1988 and 1989.
