CENTER ACTIVITIES

Sector Processing Center (SPC):

During November, NOA, JMA, and ESA processed greater than 99% of A data into B1/B2 data.

Normal operations were reported by NOA and JMA. No report for November was received from AES, but the October report was received.

ESA reported successful decontamination of the METEOSAT-4 IR and WV channels and a transfer of operations from METEOSAT-3 back to METEOSAT-4 beginning with 0900 UTC on 5 November.

A preliminary report from AES indicated a front-end hardware problem that was causing premature "end-of-image" signals. This problem caused large numbers of partial images throughout October and November, but has been rectified. AES processed greater than 97% of A data into B1/B2 data for October.

Special Area Processing Center (SAPC):

No reports were received.

Satellite Calibration Center (SCC):

No report was received. BC data are now complete through July 90.

Global Processing Center (GPC):

The GPC continued to receive B2 data, BC data and correlative data in a routine manner.

Production of NOAA-11 (preliminary) B3 data is current.

Production of NOAA-10 (preliminary) B3 data is complete through September 90 and is current. Re-calibration of NOAA-10 B3 data has been completed through December 88 and the B3 data have been shipped to the ICA.

Production of METEOSAT (preliminary) B3 data is current.

Production of GOES-7 (preliminary) B3 data is current. Re-processing to remove small offsets between the VIS and IR images and re-calibration of GOES-7 B3 data have been completed through December 87 and the data delivered to the ICA. After the switch to AAA format by NOAA, GOES IR calibration tables had to be changed to accommodate the new 10-bit representation. AES implemented this change in January 89; however, occasional switching back and forth between the old and new tables began in late December 88 and continued until the end of 89. These data are being re-processed to remove the effects of this; processing has already been completed through August 89.

Production of GOES-6 (preliminary) B3 data is completed. An error associated with the same table switching for GOES-6 was discovered. This error effects only the radiance table, but not the temperature table, for the nominal calibration; all other tables, especially the absolute calibration tables, are correct. All of the B3 data are being replaced to remove this problem (which did not affect cloud data production). Re-processing is complete through September 87.

Production of GMS-4 (preliminary) B3 data is current. Re-calibration of GMS B3 data has been completed through June 88 and the B3 data shipped to the ICA.

All B3 data is complete and in the archives through 87; all B3 data for 88 should be completed this month.

Production of TOVS correlative data is current, but we still have not received snow or sea ice data for 89.

C1 data for March and April 87 have been completed and shipped to the ICA.

C2 data are complete through 86.

An Appendix C to the Cloud Data Description document has been completed that describes the contents and format of Stage C2 data. This will be sent later this month to WMO for publication, along with revisions of the main portion and two other appendices of the document.

ISCCP Central Archive (ICA):

The ICA continued to receive B1 data from NOA, AES, ESA, and JMA and B3 and C data from the GPC in a routine manner.

SATELLITE HEALTH

The health of GMS-4, METEOSAT-3, METEOSAT-4, GOES-7, NOAA-10 and NOAA-11 remained good. Launch of METEOSAT-5 is now scheduled for 21 February 91.

OPEN ITEMS
