ISCCP PROJECT STATUS REPORT

NUMBER 99

DATE: 11/05/91

CENTER ACTIVITIES

Sector Processing Center (SPC):

During September, NOA, ESA and JMA processed greater than 99% of A data into B1/B2 data.

Normal operations were reported by NOA, ESA and JMA.

NOA sent about three weeks of overlapping data from NOAA-10 and NOAA-12 to be used for normalizing the calibrations of NOAA-12.

AES reported shipment to the GPC of the backlog of B2 data for GOES-7 covering the period from March through October 91. The backlog B1 data are being prepared for shipment to the ICA.

Special Area Processing Center (SAPC):

No reports were received.

Satellite Calibration Center (SCC):

The SCC received AC data for GMS-4, METEOSAT-3 (at 50 West) and METEOSAT-4 for September 91 and for NOAA-11 for July 91. BC data for METEOSAT-3 (at 50 West) for August 91 were sent to the GPC. Since there were very few good cloud targets near the equator at 50 West, the normalization image sector has been shifted to 5 North, 45 West.

Global Processing Center (GPC):

The GPC continued to receive B2 data, BC data and correlative data in a routine manner.

Production of NOAA-11 (preliminary) B3 data is current.

Production of NOAA-10 (preliminary) B3 data is current. No trend in the visible channel calibration for NOAA-10 is apparent in the monitoring statistics over the whole lifetime of the satellite, so delivery of these B3 data for 90 and 91 will begin.

Production of METEOSAT (preliminary) B3 data is current. Recalibration of METEOSAT B3 data through December 89 has been completed and the data shipped to the ICA. This period covers the transition from METEOSAT-3 to METEOSAT-4.

Production of GOES-7 (preliminary) B3 data is current.

Production of GMS-4 (preliminary) B3 data is current.

Test production of B3 data for INSAT-1 has been completed for January through June 86; some final adjustments to the error checking are needed. Routine inspection for small navigation errors will have to be performed before delivery to the ICA.

Production of TOVS and the ice/snow correlative datasets is current.

C1 data for December 88 and January/February 89 have been completed. An error in the satellite identification in August 88 was discovered, causing about two weeks of METEOSAT-4 images to be labeled and calibrated as METEOSAT-3 data. Although calibration procedures successfully adjusted the calibration, a noticeable anomaly was still present. These data will be re-processed before completing the C2 data for 88.

ISCCP Central Archive (ICA):

The ICA continued to receive B1 data from NOA, AES, ESA, and JMA and B3 and C data from the GPC in a routine manner.

SATELLITE HEALTH

The health of GMS-4, METEOSAT-3 (at 50 W), METEOSAT-4, METEOSAT-5, GOES-7, NOAA-11, and NOAA-12 remained good.
