Sector Processing Center (SPC):

During April, EUM, JMA, CSU, MSC and NOA processed more than 92% of A data into B1/B2 data.

Normal operations for April were reported by EUM, JMA, CSU, MSC and NOA.

CSU is still supplying the AC data for GOES-8 because the SCC has not accepted the revised format from MSC.

Satellite Calibration Center (SCC):

AC data were received for April 02 from NOAA-16 (AVHRR and HIRS), METEOSAT-5, METEOSAT-7, GMS-5, GOES-8 and GOES-10. BC data for February 02 for METEOSAT-5, METEOSAT-7, GMS-5, GOES-8 and GOES-10 were shipped to the GPC. Processing of the normalization for the "water vapor" channels is delayed to accommodate changes between NOAA-14 and NOAA-16 HIRS data.

AC data for GMS are received on CD-rom; all other AC data are received and the BC data are sent via Internet.

All BC reports now include normalization for the visible, standard infrared and "split-window" infrared channels (except METEOSAT which does not have a split-window channel), and the "water vapor" channels.

Global Processing Center (GPC):

The GPC continued to receive B2 data, BC data and correlative data in a routine manner. All of these data are now received by Internet, including the B2 data from NOA. All data (except DX) from the GPC are delivered by ftp to NOAA/NCDC and to NASA Langley.

Deliveries of B2 data from NOAA-16 are current. Processing will require more extensive software changes than for NOAA-15 because of the six channels available; the B3 formatter code is being revised now. Also, the cloud detection algorithm and the DX-format will have to be revised before these data can be used.

Deliveries of B2 data from GOES-8 are current. Production of GOES-8 (preliminary) B3 data is complete through September 01. Final B3 data have been produced through September 01.

Deliveries of B2 data from GOES-10 are current. Production of GOES-10 (preliminary) B3 data is complete through September 01. Final B3 data have been produced through September 01.

Deliveries of B2 data from METEOSAT-5 (at 63E) are current. Production of METEOSAT-5 (preliminary) B3 data is complete through September 01. Final B3 data have been produced through September 01.

Deliveries of B2 data from METEOSAT-7 are current. Production of METEOSAT-7 (preliminary) B3 data is compete through September 01. Final B3 data have been produced through September 01.

Deliveries of B2 data from GMS-5 are current. Production of GMS-5 (preliminary) B3 data is complete through September 01. Final B3 data have been produced through September 01.

Deliveries of TOVS correlative data are now current. TOVS processing is complete through September 01. A format change in TOVS occurred in October 01, so the processing software will have to be modified.

Deliveries of snow/ice correlative data are current. Production of the snow/ice dataset is complete through September 01. We have also obtained snow/ice data for the earlier NOAA-7 data period (August 81 through June 83); these will be processed and then the NOAA-7 data can be processed into DX.

DX/D1/D2 data processing is complete through September 01, the last of the NOAA-14 calibration period. A few minor adjustments are being made and the data prepared for delivery. An investigation to identify all small processing/calibration errors continues.

All data products are currently delivered by ftp to the ICA and NASA Langley (except for DX data). The GPC is now copying its entire data holdings to new, much denser tape media.

Two CDs of D2 data are now available from NASA Langley, covering 83-88 and 89-93. A new CD covering 94-98 will be released within the next month or two.

The entire D2 dataset is now available on the ISCCP Web site. Browse data now available on the Web site are monthly mean data for July 83 through December 99 and climatology results based on the period July 83 through December 99. ISCCP Central Archive (ICA):

The ICA continued to receive B1 data from NOA, MSC, EUM, CSU and JMA and B3 and D data from the GPC in a routine manner.

The health of GOES-8, GOES-10, GMS-5, METEOSAT-5, METEOSAT-7 and NOAA-16 remained good. METEOSAT-6, GOES-11 and GOES-12 are in stand-by mode. NOAA has agreed to move GOES-9 westward to provide supplementary coverage for GMS-5 until MTSAT-1R can be launched next year. China successfully launched FY-1D to replace FY-1C (polar orbiting satellite); the next FY-2 (geostationary satellite) is planned for next year. NASA's Aqua was successfully launched on 4May, however problems have been reported with the AMSR-E instrument. ADEOS-II is scheduled for launch in November 02.
